What is The X'Trapolis 2.0 Train?
The X’Trapolis 2.0 is Melbourne’s newest modernised train fleet in production set to begin in 2025. The new train fleet is reminiscent of the original X’Trapolis 100 trains with small to large improvements. In 2021 the Victorian Government announced a budget of $986 million for the 25 new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains. This new fleet has been assigned to rolling stock manufacturer Alstom, which built the original X’Trapolis 100 fleet.
With the manufacturing of the X’Trapolis 2.0, the Victorian State Government aims to retire the Comeng train fleet on the Craigieburn, Upfield and Frankston lines.
Alstom has designed the new train to provide space for about 1225 passengers, with the objective to make the fleet accessible to Victorian’s using wheelchairs and prams. To complement this the X’Trapolis 2.0 has been installed with wider doors to make boarding easier.
Advanced features such as air suspension systems for a smoother ride, improved real-time passenger information for journeys and new interior designs to improve accessibility for hearing, vision and mobility impaired passengers, including 20 wheelchair spaces.
The X’Trapolis 2.0 fleet does not currently have an expected timeline for completion.

How Many X’Trapolis Trains are Being Built?
The Victorian State Government has ordered 25 X’Trapolis 2.0 trains, these trains are to replace the aging Comeng fleet. There is no news of the Victorian Government looking for more trains, although demand will increase as the Suburban Rail Loop becomes completed. These trains will most likely not be X’Trapolis 2.0 trains, concepts suggest this could be similar to the HCMT trains in Melbourne.

What Lines Will The X'Trapolis 2.0 Run On?
Victoria’s new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains will travel between the train lines of Craigieburn, Upfield and Frankston lines.
The First X’Trapolis 2.0 Train
Officially stated on the 19th of November, 2024 Alstom completed the first X’Trapolis 2.0 train.
Quote from The Minister of Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams
“Our investment in these next generation Ballarat trains will deliver more reliable and smoother journeys for passengers.”
This has been a milestone meaning Alstom now has a completed design of the X’Trapolis 2.0 and will continue to manufacture new parts at faster rates.

Manufacturing the X’Trapolis 2.0
Alstom, the leader of the X’Trapolis 2.0 trains, has advanced to start manufacturing 25 additional trains. These X’Trapolis trains are being manufactured mainly in Victoria at Alstom’s Ballarat facility. These trains are to be made with at least 60 per cent local content, this allows local businesses to contribute towards the newest addition of Victoria’s train fleet.
This will allow a boost to Victoria’s local rolling stock manufacturing industry, supporting up to 750 local rolling stock manufacturing and supply chain jobs as well as trainee and apprenticeship positions.

Final Notes
Victoria’s plan to enhance the current train fleet shows their dedication towards public transport. The State Government persists to deliver enhanced transportation for Victorian’s anywhere around the state, which is evident in the large investment into modern rolling stock.
Copamate has contributed towards this using metal fabrication, CNC machining and assembly services.
With an unknown project deadline, Victorian’s are left to wonder when the X’Trapolis 2.0 will be completed. Although once completed the modern trains will provide great accessibility for residents close to the Craigieburn, Upfield and Frankston lines.
